TWO Basingstoke open spaces gave been named in a list of the best parks in England and Wales.

For the 16th year in a row, Eastrop Park has been awarded the Green Flag, and the War Memorial Park has been given the accolade for the eighth year in a row.

The award, which is given to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag is a sign that the open space boasts the highest possible standards, is well maintained and has excellent facilities.

To celebrate the launch of the Green Flag award, the council’s Cabinet member for planning and infrastructure, Councillor Mark Ruffell, will join the council’s green spaces community development officer, Zoe Channon and members of the operations team in the War Memorial Park to raise the flag during “Love Parks Week” – a national campaign celebrating high quality green spaces.

Cllr Mark Ruffell said: “I am delighted that once again Basingstoke has been recognised for having two of the country’s top parks.

"A Green Flag award is national recognition for all our team and the volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag award scheme manager, Paul Todd, added: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
