TWO international peace ambassadors will visit Whitchurch this month.

Jo Berry and Pat Magee will be at Whitchurch Parish Hall, in London Street, on January 26 at 7pm for the screening of Beyond Rights and Wrong: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness - a documentary which they are both in.

Following the screening, the ambassadors will hold a discussion with those at the event, organised by All Hallows Parish Church Social Justice Group.

Jo's father Anthony was killed in the 1984 bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton, and she met Pat, the provisional IRA volunteer who was convicted of the bombing, following his release from prison in 1999.

Since then they have been involved in peace and reconciliation work around the world.

Entry to the event is free, but proceeds from any donations will be given to Jo and Pat's charity, Building Bridges for Peace.

The documentary tells the story of the victims of three devastating conflicts struggle to forgive without sacrificing their need for justice.

Co-director Lekha Singh said: “The stories broke my heart yet gave me enormous hope. I hope this film has illustrated the strength of the survivors and expressed the possibility of an alternative path towards justice, a solution rooted in neither violence nor hatred.”

The award winning film has received worldwide attention, and was presented to the General Assembly by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, before a resolution for the peaceful mediation of conflict was adopted.

The screening in Whitchurch is the first of a series of events related to forgiveness, with plans to have speakers from the West Berkshire Restorative Justice service and from The Waterfall, a recovery programme helping vulnerable women overcome addictions, at future events.
