IT’S a 30-second video that cost him just £10 to make, but now James Bedford’s comic advert for tortilla chip giant Doritos is in line to be screened at one of the world’s biggest sporting events – and it could net him a cool $1million.

The 40-year-old’s entry into Doritos’ ‘Crash the Super Bowl’ contest beat off stiff competition from crisp fans from all four corners of the globe to be named as the only Briton in the final 10.

The overall winner, due to be decided later this month, will have their video screened in front of more than 60,000 fans and hundreds of millions more watching on TV around the world at the NFL extravaganza in Arizona’s University of Phoenix Stadium, on Sunday, February 1.

The winner will also land a contract with Universal Studios as part of the epic prize package.

James, from Hurstbourne Priors, near Whitchurch, entered the competition in November, but it was not until this month that he discovered his entry had beaten 5,000 submissions from across the world to make it into the top 10.

James, who acts in the video himself, is seen at the start of the advert angling at a lake in Longparish, while eating a packet of Doritos.

With a comedic musical backdrop, a fish then leaps out of the lake and bounds towards James, before they both start screaming at each other.

The fish – which was a plastic prop brought to life by puppetry and James’ computer software skills – then clasps his fin around the top of the bag of tortilla chips, before hopping off into the lake with them.

The freelance director, who has previously worked with companies such as Lynx and Go Daddy, recalled how he discovered he had made it to the final.

He said: “I had broken down on the road to Whitchurch and had to call out the AA. Then I got an e-mail from Doritos saying they needed to talk to me and that it was to do with legal issues so at the time I thought, how could this day get any worse?

“But when I picked up the phone it was Elizabeth Banks speaking – I didn’t realise who it was but she’s a really big star in America.

“She told me I’d got through to the final and I couldn’t believe it – I was super excited. I really didn’t expect to get this far.”

James’ video is now vying for public support before the eventual winner is announced at Super Bowl 49.

James will join his fellow finalists live at the “greatest show on turf” not knowing who has won until the moment their video is played live, to an estimated 115 million viewers.

James, who has already won £25,000 for getting to the final, cannot wait for his trip to America and hopes that he can come home with the top prize.

He said: “I’m really excited. I see so much on TV about American Football but I’ve never watched a live game before and we will be sitting in a box right by the touchline. We also have five days out in Arizona so hopefully I’ll get to see some of the sights.”

Voting for the final result will close on January 28 and anyone wishing to support James in his bid for the top prize can do so by visiting crashthesuperbowl.doritos.com/finalists.
