A WOMAN punched a man who indecently assaulted her as she walked through a Basingstoke underpass.

The 59-year-old woman was left shaken but otherwise uninjured after the incident that took place in Cliddesden Road on Sunday.

The woman was walking from town sometime between 6.50pm and 7.30pm when she came to the point where Cliddesden Road passes under the A30 Ringway South.

She heard a man shouting from behind her. She ignored him but he then came up to her and touched her in an indecent way and made an inappropriate comment to her, police said.

She punched him and carried on walking, and he eventually walked off in the other direction.

The suspect is described as aged in his late 20s to mid 30s, Asian, possibly Indian in appearance, around 5ft 5ins tall and of stocky build.

He wore a dark coloured coat and hooded top, a scarf, grey jogging bottoms and trainers.

PC Dawn Jenks appealed for anyone who may have seen this man in the area at the time to come forward.

She added: “I’d especially like to speak with a cyclist who is believed to have ridden past. He is described as a man wearing glasses and a cycling helmet.

“This is a busy underpass used by many people and I’d like to reassure people this is not a frequent occurrence.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Jenks at Basingstoke police station at 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
