REFORM planning laws – that was the message from the MP for North East Hampshire ahead of a visit to Hart by the planning minister.

James Arbuthnot MP spoke to his Conservative colleague Brandon Lewis to highlight issues facing Hart District Council in the production of a new Local Plan.

Hart’s initial plan, a blueprint for future housing development, was rejected by a planning inspector last year, who said its housing figure was too low and stated not enough work was done with neighbouring authorities.

Mr Lewis will visit Hart on Monday, September 22, to address a meeting of residents concerned about perceived overdevelopment in the district in the absence of a Local Plan.

It follows a public meeting earlier this year in which more than 250 Hook villagers voiced their concerns to a panel including Mr Arbuthnot and Basingstoke MP Maria Miller.

Mr Arbuthnot said: “I am working hard with colleagues in Parliament to make the case for reforms to planning laws.

“We need to prioritise the development of brownfield land and ensure that infrastructure is delivered before new homes are built.

“I know that these are the views of local people and I put these points to the minister.”

Ranil Jayawardena, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for North East Hampshire, also attended the meeting between Mr Arbuthnot and Mr Lewis.

He said he would like to see Hart District Council be able to reject planning applications while it draws up its new Local Plan.
