A SERVING soldier who was arrested following a fatal road collision in North Hampshire has been released on conditional bail.

The 24-year-old man was detained on suspicion of two offences of causing death by dangerous driving, two offences of death by careless driving through drink or drugs and the offence of drink-driving.

The incident which took place at around 7.10pm on Tuesday night, saw two teenage girls Lucy Pygott,17, from Hartley Wintney, and Stacey Burrows, 16, from Farnham, were involved in a collision with a black Ford Focus on Queens Avenue, Aldershot, whilst out jogging.

Both girls, who were members of the Aldershot, Farnham and District (AFD) Athletic Club where killed in the incident.

Paying tribute to Lucy Pygott, her family issued a statement, which said: "Lucy was an absolute joy to us and we feel lucky that she has been part of our family for 17 years.”

Stacey Burrows family did not want to comment at this time. 

Team-mates of the pair visited the crash scene to leave flowers, and it was reported that the victims were long-distance cross-country runners and were doing a warm-up run at the start of their training session.

Well-wishers have left messages on social media, including Olympian Eilish McColgan, who posted on Twitter: "Awful news coming from Aldershot this morning. Thoughts go out to family, friends and fellow team mates at AFD."

A police spokesman said: "No-one else was hurt and inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of what happened."

Specially-trained officers are supporting the girls' families.

A card left at the crash scene by Alanna Goddard and her friends read: "Stacey & Lucy, two girls with such pure racing talent. May you continue to run far amongst the moon and stars and never let anyone stop you from dreaming. With deepest sympathy."

It continued: "Our thoughts go to your family and close friends in this time of bereavement.”

The 24-year-old male will answer bail on February 14, 2017.

Specialist officers are continuing to provide support to the teenagers’ families.
