BIKE thefts in Basingstoke and Deane have been on the rise according to Hampshire Constabulary.

Officers are warning residents to make sure their bikes are secure following two bikes being stolen in Oakley on Tuesday.

Police have seen an increase in reported stolen bikes from Basingstoke and the surrounding rural areas in the past few days.

PCSO Emma Page said: “If you are in private rented accommodation and you keep your bike in a shed or garage, make sure there is a decent lock on the door and the bike can be secured with a "D" lock to an anchor point that is fixed into the ground.

“Make a note of the unique serial number which can be found by turning the bike upside down and it's displayed on the frame by the pedals.

“This helps Police return any bikes found to their rightful owners. Also take a photo of your bike and keep it somewhere safe.”

If anyone sees anything suspicious or has had their bike stolen they should contact Basingstoke CID on 101.
