A GROUP of wild birds were viciously killed in a “disgusting” attack leaving villagers shocked by the incident.

Police are on the hunt for the people responsible for killing four wild birds, including two new born Egyptian geese.

It is believed the birds were shot with an air rifle or similar weapon at the duck pond near the junction of Fleet Road and High Street, in Hartley Wintney between 7pm on May 23, and 1pm on May 24.

The birds were discovered by Becky Moss who was out having a picnic with her sister.

Ms Moss then reported the incident to Ian Stephenson, a volunteer who deals with the maintenance of the pond and feeds the birds.

Mr Stephenson, who lives in York Lane, said he had gone down to feed the birds and discovered a number of them had the same injury.

“I went down to the pond about midday and this lady told me there were a number of dead ducks around.

“I checked them over and could see they had pellet wounds in their necks and heads,” said the 57-year-old.

“The people who did this either get a kick out of shooting things or a kick out of upsetting people.

“It’s just mindless.”

A fifth male Moorhen, which lives in one of the duck boxes, made by Mr Stephenson, on the pond was also shot but was rescued and is expected to make a full recovery.

The RSPCA is currently investigating the incident, alongside Hampshire constabulary.

Chief inspector at the RSPCA John Harrod said: “We are sorry to hear about what has happened to these poor ducks in the village of Hartley Wintney.

“We are currently investigating this incident and are trying to get to the bottom of exactly what has happened here.”

Police are appealing for anyone with any information on the incident to contact them to help with the investigation. PC Geoff Hill, of Farnborough police station, said: “It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to kill, injure or take any wild bird.

“The duck pond is at the heart of the village and has provided amusement for generations of families.

“It is disgusting that someone should curtail this by killing innocent and defenceless wildlife.” I
