SHOPPERS in Basingstoke are being warned about thefts following 17 reports of purses being stolen in the town centre.

The reports have been since August and in most cases the thieves stole the purses in areas where it was crowded and the victim was distracted for a few moments, leaving their purse exposed.

The thieves have also managed to get hold of the pin numbers of cash cards and use them quickly to withdraw cash from local ATMs before the cards are reported stolen.

In the latest case on Saturday (October 10), a 75-year-old woman had her purse stolen while shopping with a friend.

She cancelled her cards quickly while still out shopping but found they had been used within minutes of being stolen, to withdraw £1,000 in cash.

Officers are appealing for any information about who is responsible for the crimes which they believe are connected.

They are also advising people to keep a very close eye on their purses and wallets and keep them close at all times.

Anyone with information should contact Sergeant Trevor Taylor on 101.
