A THIEF stole a luxury car in Kempshott that had been advertised for sale.

The theft of the black Mercedes C350 AMG Sport took place at a house in Bunting Mews, between 6pm and 10.45pm on Monday, March 17.

Officers are keen to speak to an Asian man who came to view the car earlier that day by appointment.

The victim gave him the spare key while he looked around the vehicle. The man was not left alone during this time, but it was later discovered that the key returned was not the same one he had been given.

PC Craig Bannerman said people who are selling their cars privately should not hand over their keys to potential buyers and should open doors or the bonnet themselves.

He added: “Turn the engine over yourself and don’t let anyone take the vehicle for a test drive unless you are in the car.

“There’s no reason why anyone should require the spare key for viewing. If someone does act suspiciously, note how they arrived, and whether they leave by car or on foot.”

Anyone with information on the theft or who has had a similar experience can contact PC Bannerman at Basingstoke police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
