DOZENS of local runners interrupted their London Marathon training for a black tie ball – and raised more than £7,000.

Athletes from Hatch Warren Runners and Chineham Park Runners discarded their trainers for just one night in favour of bow ties and posh frocks to raise money for Children with Cancer UK at a charity auction, held at Beechdown Health and Fitness Club, in Winchester Road.

The ball was held in memory of five-year-old Jayden Wilson, who passed away on Christmas Eve last year, after being diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour.

Lots at the auction included holidays in Florida and France, four tickets for the Footballer of the Year dinner and afternoon tea at the House of Lords.

Organiser Sarah Smith said: “Some of us have been incredibly fortunate to get places in the London Marathon this year and felt we wanted to identify a charity that was close to our hearts.

“We were all moved by the plight of Jayden Wilson who lived in Hatch Warren and fought so courageously against cancer.

“Unfortunately, he lost his battle last year so we are raising money in his memory for Children With Cancer UK.

“They not only support families going through heart wrenching journeys like Jayden’s family but they also support research programmes into childhood cancers.

“People have been so generous with their time and donations and we managed to raise £7,097 which is incredible. And overall we have raised almost £15,000.

“For those of who’ve been lucky enough to get a spot in the London Marathon it will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Local businesses and individuals supported the ball by providing auction lots and support.
