AIRMEN and air cadets paid their respects at a memorial service to honour the heroes of the Battle of Britain.

Scores of people attended the annual service at St Gabriel’s Church, in Tewkesbury Close, Popley, held by the Basingstoke branch of the Royal Air Force Association.

The service, led by The Right Reverend Peter Hancock, Bishop of Basingstoke, remembered those who fought in the 1940 air conflict between the RAF and the German Luftwaffe.

Those attending included borough mayor Councillor Martin Biermann and his wife Chansopha, Squadron Leader Kevin MacNaught-on, of 7 Squadron, who represented RAF Odiham , and cadets of 443 (Basingstoke) Squadron Air Training Corps.

Bryan Jenkins, of the Basingstoke branch of the Royal Air Force Association, said: “It is important to remember. If we had not won that particular battle, the world would have been completely different.”
