Costa Coffee hopes to open shop in The Malls

COSTA Coffee has applied to open a shop in The Malls in Basingstoke town centre.

The chain wants to use the former Evans store, in Castle Square, and has asked Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for permission to change the unit from a Class A1 to a mixed use Class A1 and A3 coffee shop with 23 tables and 56 chairs.

I think that corner would be good for a coffee shop particularly if they can open it up a bit more and maybe have some tables and chairs outside

I agree. Castle Square is just a windswept thoroughfare. Even the TV doesn't encourage many people to stop so why not open a cafe with outside seating and ditch the TV.

I must admit, the last time I was walking through town I thought to myself "what Basinstoke needs is more coffee shops".

At least it's not another pound shop!! Perhaps they've read previous comments about the dead zone and are trying to make it more up market. They'll be opening a nice Italian Deli next.

You'd prefer an empty unit then? Or a coffee shop that at least will be busy - despite the so-called recession, Costa/Starbucks branches do seem to remain permanently busy!
