A WOMAN who plummeted from a footbridge over the A339 this morning is fighting for her life in hospital.

The A339 Ringway North was closed in both directions between the Aldermaston roundabout and the A33 slip road for more than an hour between around 9.05am and 10.15am while the woman, in her forties, was treated on scene, before being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.

Her injuries are described as life-threatening.

A passerby who tried to cross the footbridge, which links Popley and Oakridge, shortly after the incident said she heard the woman, who has not yet been named, screaming as she lay on the road.

The woman, whose husband has been informed, was not hit by any cars, said police.

Vicky O’Hare, corporate communications officer for Hampshire Constabulary , said it wasn’t clear how she fell from the footbridge, but that there were no suspicious circumstances.

Police were called to the scene at 9.05am after being called by a member of the public.

Michelle Ullett, communications manager for South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: “We sent an air ambulance, two ambulance crews and one ambulance officer.

“We treated one female in her forties for possible serious injuries at the scene and she was then flown to Southampton General hospital.”
 

She was taken from the scene at around 10.10am and remains in a serious condition.
