OLYMPIC torch relay runner Peter Mansell visited a nursery in Basingstoke.

Mr Mansell, a canoeing coach whose stretch carrying the torch was in Bexhill-on-Sea, went to JJ’s Chatterbox Nursery.

Mr Mansell, who lives in Oakley, gave a talk on his experience of being part of the torch relay and how much he enjoyed it.

Lorraine Smith, proprietor of the nursery, in Morse Road, said: “It was a brilliant success and I was amazed at the effect the torch had. It did seem to possess a tangible, positive aura that instantly captivated everyone.”

The children of the nursery were also in high spirits after the visit. Dylan Bishop, aged three, said: “The torch was brilliant. It was gold and lighter than I thought it would be, and it was like the one we made. It was lovely to see it.”

Mr Mansell’s visit was part of an Olympic week with the children taking part in the nursery’s annual sports day, held at Down Grange athletics track.
