Glass recycling in Basingstoke moves ahead
2:00pm Friday 6th July 2012 in News By Simon Moss
ALMOST all residents in Basingstoke and Deane can now leave bottles and jam jars outside their homes to get them recycled.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has rolled out the final phase of its kerbside glass collection scheme to homes in areas such as Beggarwood, Buckskin, Overton and Whitchurch.
Only those in extreme rural areas – where large trucks cannot get through – can’t yet take part in the scheme. However, by the end of July, a fleet of smaller vehicles will be in place, delivering blanket coverage across the borough.
Councillor Robert Donnell, Cabinet member for the environment and climate change, said: “The borough is going greener and we want to help people to recycle all they can by making it as easy for them as possible.
“Most homes in the borough now have glass recycling, and we are doing everything we can to bring it to everyone.
“As the average home uses over 3,000 bottles and jars a year, collecting glass for recycling means we are stopping the need to throw it away in the grey rubbish bins if you cannot get to a bottle bank.”
Households have been provided with a plastic tub to fill with glass bottles and jars, which will be collected by waste teams every other week.
It is hoped that the scheme, funded through a reorganisation of the borough’s waste contract, will help boost the borough’s ailing recycling rate, which is currently around 23 per cent – the lowest in Hampshire.

For God's sake - sick of hearing about these potty, stupid ideas from the recycling police.

1. Empty the grey bin.
2. Pick up the glass box.
3. Empty the glass box contents into the now empty grey bin.
4. Empty grey bin now full of glass into dustcart.

I'm saving them a job then!
Mind you, I think you are spoiled where you live as step 2 has been missed twice in 6 weeks here.

Its people like you by doing that makes our council tax go up as they are getting heavy fines for not doing there bit for recycling which made them bottom if the list for Hampshire and are you sure you put your green box out as they wont go looking for it if you have not put it out properly!!!

deepinsight wrote:That may be how they are disposing of your glass in your area, but I can see there are two separate compartments in the truck when it comes around. Yes they empty the glass in to a larger wheelie bin, but that large wheelie bin is emptied on a separate hydraulic arm going into the truck. Check it next time and if they are emptying it into the general waste, ring the council and let them know. But I think you will find they are in fact doing it properly.
Interesting to see what they do with the glass boxes: 1. Empty the grey bin. 2. Pick up the glass box. 3. Empty the glass box contents into the now empty grey bin. 4. Empty grey bin now full of glass into dustcart.

If you want my bottles and jars, charge me a small deposit like you did 40 years ago. Back then kids would walk miles to get the 5p back, rather than smash them in the road.
