TO CELEBRATE International Women’s Day, Basingstoke Voluntary Services (BVS) will be holding an Olympic event next month.

The free event, which will be held at Basingstoke College of Technology in Worting Road, Basingstoke, will feature pampering and well-being sessions, talks and entertainment provided by local choirs and cheerleaders.

The event should be opened by a local Olympic torch bearer, who has yet to be officially announced.

BVS is hoping to track down local people who have attended any previous Olympics and have any special memories or photographs they would be willing to share.

Pam Gibson, from BVS, said they were hoping someone would step forward in advance.

She added: “The role we would like them to have as part of the event would be a short speech if they were comfortable with that, or if not, just to share their memories which we could read out on the day.”

The event, which is being put on with the help of Hart Voluntary Action and Rushmoor Voluntary Services will be held on Thursday, March 8 between 10am and 5pm.

Men will be welcome at the event, which will, however, showcase women and their achievements. There will be stands on themes relating to women from all cultures, religions and ages.

Three acoustic acts will be competing to win a public vote which will decide which one will be competing at this year’s Basingstoke Live.

Transport will be available on the day for older people, disabled people or |anyone who is not able to use public transport.

To book a slot for transport, please call 01256 423816 by March 4.
