MILLIONS of people who died in the Holocaust, as well as countless atrocities since, were remembered in Basingstoke last week.
To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor David Leeks, laid a wreath at the town’s War Memorial, in London Road, before a solemn service of remembrance.
Dozens of civic dignitaries, council workers and members of the public took part in the ceremony, to remember the six million Jews who were killed by the Nazis during the Second World War. They also paid respect to thousands of others who died or suffered in concentration camps, including disabled people and gypsies.
Cllr Leeks told The Gazette: “It is important that we remember all the people who died in the Holocaust, and all atrocities since.
“We must not let this important day be forgotten which is why I was so pleased to see such a large crowd. It seems to get bigger every year and that can only be a good thing for challenging persecution. With all the atrocities we have had across the world, you wonder how humans can hurt so many others.”
Holocaust Memorial Day also serves as a chance to share the memory of millions who have died in genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and other countries.
