A CRICKET pavilion that has been used by players for more than 30 years was set on fire.

The fire service was called to Odiham and Greywell Cricket Club in King Street, Odiham at 8.15am this morning to reports of smoke coming from the building.

Nigel Cooper, station manager at Basingstoke fire station, said there was a “substantial fire” when the crew arrived.

He told The Gazette this morning: “It’s still smouldering and there are still some pockets of fire that we are putting water onto. A huge part of the structure has been damaged so we are cutting away parts of the roof. There’s substantial damage inside and 100 per cent smoke damage.

“We have no idea what started it but we have asked for the police and the fire investigation team to come and have a look. We are probably going to be here a couple more hours.”

There were tears from club members who gathered outside the building this morning as news of the fire spread.

Phil Thomas, club captain of the club, told The Gazette: “There’s years of memorabilia in there. It’s gutting.”
