A NEW orienteering trail has been launched in the grounds of a historic north Hampshire house.

Designed by the Basingstoke Andover District Orienteers, the route at The Vyne in Sherborne St John is suitable for a wide range of fitness levels and ages.

It was tested in October as part of the National Trust’s walking festival by families who explored the old woodland as they navigated their way around the course, starting with a 2.3km introductory route for first time map readers, and a 2.9km course for the more experienced.

Jules Fuller, visitor experience manager, said: “Our new orienteering course is a permanent feature and it’s a great way to explore the estate in a physically and intellectually challenging way.

“The estate is full of fabulous walking routes and from November to February next year, we’ve waived all entry charges to the grounds, and reduced house admission by around 50 per cent – a great reason to visit and see what we’ve got to offer.”

The trail lies in Morgaston Woods, home to hundreds of plant and animal species from roe, fallow and muntjac deer to exotic fungi, orchids and wading birds.
