A RENEWABLE energy company that wants to build a wind farm in a north Hampshire village has unveiled ambitious new proposals.

Oxford-based TCI Renewables (TCIR) wishes to erect seven wind turbines on land at Woodmoncott Down, near Popham, and could submit a planning application as early as next year. The company claims the wind farm could generate clean electricity for 7,000 homes.

The new proposals have emerged despite TCIR having an application for a test mast – which would determine how much energy could be gathered from the site – being rejected by borough planners earlier this year.

Led by Councillor Mark Ruffell, ward member for Upton Grey and The Candovers, opponents of the plan argued that the 60-metre mast would adversely impact the area.

TCI Renewables intends to appeal against this decision while pushing forward with its fresh designs.

Director Bruce Hutt said: “From initial studies, Woodmancott is proving itself to be a good location for the siting of wind turbines.

“It has a favourable wind resource, is largely free of ecological constraints and the area has low penetration of renewable energy.

“Hosting a wind farm in this area would allow the local community to make their contribution towards combating climate change while at the same time benefiting from a community fund provided by TCIR and increased business rates to be spent locally.”

Residents will be able to view the proposals at a public meeting at East Stratton Village Hall, in Church Bank Road, Micheldever, from 3pm until 7.30pm on Tuesday, July 19.

A dedicated website – woodmancottdown.com – has been set up and will be updated throughout the development process.
