THREE sons are celebrating the music of their legendary father – jazz icon Dave Brubeck, who is in his 90th year – with a special concert.

Darius, Chris and Dan Brubeck have toured the world with their father – the American jazz giant of the 1950s and 1960s behind standards such as In Your Own Sweet Way and The Duke – but it is in his honour that they are bringing Brubecks Play Brubeck to The Anvil on November 26.

Their 11-stop tour across the UK begins in Liverpool and the talented trio – with Darius on piano, Chris on bass and trombone, and Dan, on drums – will be performing Brubeck originals and standard tunes as well as their own compositions. They will be joined by guest saxophonist Dave O’Higgins.

Darius, the oldest brother, said: “That makes a classic quartet line-up which is exactly the line-up our father used from the early 1950s onwards.

“The music we play, the exact repertoire, will probably be decided night by night because there’s so much to choose from and both Chris and I are composers too.

“But audiences will have the famous Brubeck pieces like Take Five. They will be the lynchpins of each programme and are the things they will recognise from the albums.”

The jazz pianist, who is also a band leader and teacher, added: “It’s going to be very relaxed and energetic at the same time.

“The last time we played together was at the Kennedy Center Honours on December 6, 2009, when our father was being honoured. It’s like the honours list that you get over here – a group of Americans each year are selected to be honoured and our father was selected.”

Dave Brubeck turns 90 on December 6 this year and still performs in America.

The three brothers have toured and recorded with their father as Two Generations of Brubeck and The New Brubeck Quartet, and Darius insists they are beyond any sibling rivalry.

He said: “There’s a lot of disparity between us. Chris composes cross-genre pieces and I specialise in South African jazz and world music and have collaborated with Indian musicians. There’s a lot of different music exploration we have done separately, but our common ground and foundation is Dave’s music.

“When we get together, it’s quite joyful and relaxed. We have similar tastes and senses of humour so we get on well together on the road. Dave O’Higgins fits in well too, the four of us performed together about ten years ago.”

Tickets for the show, at 7.45pm, are priced at £22.50 and can be booked by calling Anvil Arts on 01256 844244, or online at anvilarts.org.uk.
