Detectives may investigate Overton Mill

THE Serious Fraud Office may investigate the problems at De La Rue’s Overton Mill after bosses revealed they believe key staff have been falsifying documents.

The company said it has passed its findings to the Serious Fraud Office and is taking disciplinary action against those involved.

A new managing director has also been brought in for the currency division.

The world’s biggest maker of banknote paper said paper test certificates for customers had been falsified.

It is expected the problems will cost £35 million in lost profits for the half-year to the end of September.

Chief executive James Hussey has already resigned over the issue, which forced De La Rue to suspend production at Overton Mill in July.

The company says it is now ready to re-start production of the special banknote paper for which the specifications were not being met.

Nicholas Brookes, chairman of De La Rue, said: “The behaviour of some of our employees in this matter was totally unacceptable and contravened De La Rue’s rigorous standards.

“We do not tolerate such behaviour and appropriate disciplinary action is being taken.

“The board has put an immediate end to the irregularities that have been identified.”

The problems are thought to concern the supply of watermarked banknote paper to the Reserve Bank of India – the company’s biggest contract.

Indian government officials were supposed to have flown in to the UK last month to discuss the problem.

Shares have plunged by more than a quarter since the revelations first emerged and industry experts fear De La Rue’s reputation will have been seriously damaged.

well to be honest this dosent surprise me, after working there for some time it was clear to me that this problem stemmed from the top, managers encouraging this falsification of results in its quality labs, But it was obvious this was going to happen sooner or later, De la Rue will be soon moving all production to india when the joint venture mill is finished in india.. to coin a phase from mr Mctaggart the prodution manager faster... they don't care about quality just output.... we will soon be saying goodbye to another of our great institutions, and who will make our bank notes? because theres no-one else

oh yeah... reputation, to my mind they never had good reputation around the world, except the third world where corruption is rife, take the king of vannatu in the south pacific, ordering new banknotes to commemorate the start of his reign, they got there they all fell apart (quality).. de la rue got a queens award for industry for those new notes.. also the quality of uk bank notes are really poor with a very short life span, but de la rue can get away with this because they have got there toe in the door at the bank of england. But still the portals mill is being run into the ground for there own means

I'm quite shocked to learn that De La Rue are moving production to India, have these people no pride in their own country, evidently not. They, like all big business nowadays, are just interested in making money with no concern for contributing anything back to society whatsoever. They go where the cheap labour is and if they had their way we would work for peanuts as well. I'm not a Communist, not even a Socialist but if our politicians and governments don't start representing 'all' sections of society soon, within the next few years, I can see nothing but trouble in the future. Being in the EU and not even being given the right to be asked if we wish to be in it is just an indication of the type of people we now have representing us in all the major political parties. People really need to wake up, start talking and start making there opinion known that the EU is all part of a plan by globalist business interests to take advantage of us all. A cheap pool of labour to be exploited, manipulated and abused not for your benefit but for the benefit of a small minority of stateless people who control the worlds wealth. Don't believe me, fair enough but you will find out for yourself within the next few years if we don't do something about it now.
