A GIANT sunflower grown by school children won a competition for its impressive height.
The 200cm flower at Great Binfields Primary School was declared the winner of the competition run by Basepoint Basingstoke in Daneshill.
Children planted the seed earlier this year and nurtured it for several months, watching it grow.
The school, in Great Binfields Farm Lane, beat off competition from Fairfields Primary School with their 146cm sunflower, and eight other schools which also took part in the contest.
Basepoint, which provides work space for local businesses, will visit the school to present the children with £250 vouchers for books or IT equipment.
Debbie Gains, assistant centre manager at Basepoint said: “I am really chuffed that Great Binfields Primary School has won the sunflower competition because the children from the gardening club worked really hard to grow their flower.
“The school’s water facilities are at the opposite end of the school so they had a long walk to water the plants, which they did a few times every day.”
