CHILDREN took education to new heights in a week celebrating the phenomenon of flight at a north Hampshire school.

Buryfields Infant School, in Buryfields, Odiham, staged a series of cross-curriculum events celebrating the science, history and geography of flight.

These included a trip to nearby RAF Odiham, a landing on the school field by a Chinook helicopter and its crew, and flight-themed talks from a beekeeper and a moth expert.

Headteacher Susan Croft said: "We have a curriculum week like this every year. Last year, it was themed around castles and it was great, but we have topped that this year.

"The feedback we have had from parents has been absolutely wonderful. They've said the children have never been as motivated as they have been during this week."

The week of flighty fun was rounded off with an afternoon of science activities, which parents were invited to take part in, and the release of scores of helium-filled balloons.

Each balloon carries contact information for the school and Miss Croft is hoping they will be returned from weird and wonderful locations.

She said: "We've already had some replies from Worthing and Little Hampton. It was a lovely clear day when we released the balloons so, hopefully, they will have gone a long way.

"We've already got a map of Britain and Europe to mark them on."
