New figures show crime rates falling

CRIME is going down across Hampshire last year, according to the latest figures published by the Home Office.

In the year from September 2008 to September 2009, there were more than 153,700 crimes across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, which was a drop of five per cent on the previous 12 months.

Towards the end of last year, The Gazette revealed how crime in Basingstoke had increased, despite positive figures reported across the county. The annual Basingstoke and Deane Community Safety Forum Strategic Assessment report showed robbery had risen by more than 45 per cent and burglary by more than 49 per cent between June 2008 and May 2009, compared with the same period in 2007 and 2008.

The Home Office figures do not include a breakdown for Basingstoke, but Hampshire Constabulary Chief Constable Alex Marshall said public confidence is rising across the county.

He added: “The majority of people believe the police and local councils are dealing with the issues which affect them.”

Which is great news given that Hampshire Police need to 'save' £24 million pounds. Could it be that the time they take to answer the phone and hassle it is to report crime are responsible for this drop? Perhaps they should introduce on-line crime reporting and watch the rates of reported crime soar!

Does anyone bother reporting minor crimes anymore? There's little chance of detection even if the police can be bothered to turn up.

I enjoy the CSi programs on TV but fear this is a long way from real life in Basingstoke 2010.

Once again manipulated figures grab the headlines, but the truth rarely makes the paper at all.

Don't believe it. No doubt manipulated figures. Basingstoke is becoming the crime capital of Hampshire!

i have to agree with you on this many people now days do not bother reporting crimes. Most of them take it that this is the way we have to live now, They keep asking residents to join the local goups that keep an eye out but that is all P'R plus you pay your tax for your safety by the police. when they turn up three or four days after a crime has happened what is the point of them being there for you, they just like to dress up in the yank style of gear they have and even the dark glasses to round them off.

I have had occasion to call the Police three times in the last few years and each time they have responded fast and dealt with the issue professionally. Personally I don't have much time for them, but I can only judge them on my dealings with them, other than rumour, fairtale and guessing - and they have been pretty faultless.

Could it be that some people assume them to have crystal balls and deal with crime that is not reported? Please remember if your neighbourhood is suffering from crime and anti-social behaviour then it is most likely that it is *LOCAL* children doing it. Please blame the p*ss poor parenting before moaning about the police.

Try telling that to the staff at One Stop in Chineham.
