MP calls for Post Offices to reopen

BASINGSTOKE MP Maria Miller has called for two north Hampshire Post Offices to reopen after describing a closure consultation as “a sham”.

The MP spoke out after a consumer watchdog claimed the consultation process for the closure of 2,500 Post Office branches nationwide was flawed.

Consumer Focus’ report found 2.7million tried to air their views through writing to their MP, taking part in newspaper campaigns or other means, but the Post Office reported receiving only 190,000 formal responses.

That meant that, when combined with 15,000 responses sent to the watchdog’s predecessor Postwatch, only one in 13 people effectively contributed to the formal decision making process to close post offices.

Mrs Miller described the report’s findings as “shocking” and called for the Post Office to review its decision to close “two of Basingstoke’s top performing branches” – Old Basing and Kings Furlong – saying little regard had been paid to residents’ views and concerns.

She said: “This report confirms that the consultation was a sham. The lack of weight given to the consultation process meant that residents’ very real concerns were effectively dismissed without consideration.

“Basingstoke lost a further two well-used and much-needed Post Offices as a result of the last round of cuts, leaving those left still struggling to cope.”

Sue Dakin, a Post Office external relations manager, said there had been a massive publicity campaign for the consultation.

She added: “While any decision on a Post Office closure is difficult, the fact remains that when the Network Change programme ended last summer, more than 99 per cent of the public had seen no change to their local Post Office branch or were within one mile by road of an alternative branch.”

But Carlos - it's not just the MP's at it. There are plenty of our local councillors dipping their hands in our pockets.

As far as Post Offices go I have to give the current Mayor, Brian Gurden a mention. His band of four Liberal Democrat councillors in Brighton Hill have allowed the former Beechdown School site to be used for Sheltered OAP housing but alas they have no local Post Office. However, thanks to them ticking the planning boxes they do have two Pizza shops and two chemists 100 yards apart. They can enjoy the walk via the new footpath that has never been completed properly paid for from the proceeds of the sale. I suspect the OAP's will want to get out because they thought it would be a brilliant idea to put a teenage attracting games area right outside! They shoot, they score! In fact they waste alot of our money Carlos. The last couple of weeks have seen them lift the block paving near Asda that is only a few years old, and re-jig it. I guess this is not work carried out under warranty :-)

Best of all, for me, is the totally unnecessary rebuilding of a playpark in Gershwin Road some 100 metres from a similar facility that already exists. This single act of stupidity is rumoured to be costing £75,000. Or in English a little shy of 10 years worth of Councillor Allowances (or part time cleaner wages). So whilst I agree with you that what our MPs do with our money is shameful, don't overlook the utter abuse of our money by local councillors or which there are *60* at nearly £10k each per year. THAT IS THE MOST SUPREME WASTE OF OUR MONEY KNOWN TO MANKIND.

I agree with both of you, they're all corrupt money grabbing self obsessed wimps. Maria Miller is just a total waste of space, so far she's done absolutely nothing, barely showing her face but now its election time she pops up saying she's going to fix everything. yeh right. What are supposed to do though, we're forced to let these idiots govern us!

It is true that laotzu that decisions are made by borough & county councillors together with MP's BUT all these positions are elected ones. There are elections coming up - turnouts have been decreasing and really could be improved upon - residents can make their voices heard by voting.

yes you may be right KOBT, not all Cllr's stiff the tax payer, I do believe they should be paid for there expensives, but your right some just take the hot steamy yellow stuff!
Take the amount of money that was spent having a special meeting to discuss the Mayor farce, how much did that cost us? many Cllr's openly said what a waste of time and tax payers money, all because some pea minded barrister (Raffell or Raffle or idiot, how ever he spells his name) wants to break years of history with his and his small minded party (exept Cllr Robinson, he did a good speech).
They treat us like we're goldfish with 20 second memories, come the election should be interesting, back to topic, it is a shame that the PO's have closed, Overton has a great PO, always friendly and helpful.
PO's are part of the community and should stay that way, Maria Miller and her fellow party members do have a nerve saying its a "sham" lets look at the railways, who sold them off? oh yes the Tories and it was George Young who signed that one off, who sold or the Council Houses of yes the Tories and funnily enough it was George again who signed that one off, BT, British Gas all things that belonged to us the Tax payer sold off by guess who!

I'd like to know what Maria knows about Post Offices, or even if she's been in one. To many people they're community meeting places where small business goes on, hardly comparable to how our MP's do their business!

If they are closed down our pensioners have to catch a bus to the next one which can take the best part of a day to do.
Let's think of those less fortunate than yourselves for a change eh?

I did ask our current lib dem mayor Brian Gurden what efforts he and his 3 lib dem collieages had made to get Brighton Hill Post Office reopened, but two weeks on there is no response. Perhaps I should ask him a less taxing question like 'what's your favourite colour?' {answer, a deep shade of blue.....}.

Yes Maria, we know there is an Election in May, it's ok, we get the message.

Dear Brian Gurden Mayor of Basingstoke, Maria Miller has spotted there is an election coming and jumped on the Post Office bandwagon. Can you tell the people of Brighton Hill - the ward you represent - when their Post Office will re-open or what you have done in the last 18 months to get it reopened? It's getting on for 2 years and other than a nice picture of you standing outside of it in June 2008, you've been *really quite* ever since?
We await to hear from you.

Why does Maria Miller care when she doesn't even live here ? When are we going to have an MP that wants to live the life in Basingstoke and not just jump on the "hot topic" of the day ? She does not feel the pain of life in Basingstoke as those of us that do actually live here do.

spcleary, Hatch Warren

I totally agree and what must be a concern to Maria Miller MP is the fact that nobody has supported her on all the issues that she has “Invited” the Gazette to report.
Her constituency plays second fiddle to Political ego and as a consequence the closure of Chine Park School is of no consequence to her and that applies to post offices closures.
The post office closure is just a bandwagon; the School closure is just an embarrassment and the less said the better.

It's an interesting point you make about where Politicians live. Given this thread is about Post Offices is is right to point out that there are four LIB/DEM Councillors in Brighton Hill (where the Post Office closed on their watch) but only two of them even live in the area. One lives in Buckskin, the other in Grove. Is their not a similar situation with the Popley Labour Councillors where two of them live in Winklebury? So as you rightly point out it is not a satisfactory state of affairs.

It needs to change - if you want to represent the ward at least have the decency to live in it. It really should be make a requirement. If you move out of the area, then you are no longer entitled to do the job.
