‘They don’t care about the school or children’

IT WAS the news they expected and dreaded – but parents have still reacted angrily after hearing that county education experts want to axe their children’s Basingstoke school.

Senior education officers have advised Hampshire County Council education chief Councillor David Kirk that he should decide to close Chineham Park Primary School in Popley.

The advice is contained in a report to Cllr Kirk, the executive member for education, following a month of consultation with various parties, including parents.

Parents collecting their children from the school last Thursday afternoon said they felt their views have not been listened to – and they accused the county council of not caring about their children.

Many parents said they will take their children to protest ahead of the decision day meeting at the county council’s headquarters in Winchester on Thursday.

Maria Barker, a parent from Wordsworth Close, Popley, said: “If they cared about the kids, they wouldn’t be shutting the school. They go on about other schools in the area but they aren’t any better.”

Trudie Gregory added: “I’m upset and angry to be honest. It feels like they don’t care about the school or the children.”

Many parents feel their questions about why the school should not close have not been answered, and some approached members of the school’s Interim Executive Board, who were at Chineham Park Primary on Thursday afternoon for a meeting with staff.

The IEB was appointed by the county council in June in a bid to help pull the school out of its dire position after it was rated “inadequate” by Ofsted inspectors, put into special measures and its number of pupils continued to decline.

Parent Joanne O’Shea said: “The IEB aren’t interested because they want to close the school. It made me so angry. As parents, we do have a right to know what’s going on, but they don’t care.”

As reported in last Thursday’s Gazette, Popley East borough Councillor Andrew McCormick resigned from his position on the IEB last week because he said other members want the school to close but were not saying so in public.

Cllr McCormick said he was not surprised by the decision report recommendation for closure, adding: “It was probably in place before the rest of the report was written. They have ignored the evidence that we (supporters of the school) have put forward.”

The report to Cllr Kirk was written by Chris Holt, the county council’s head of school organisation, and Martin Shefferd, school organisation officer.

They recommend Cllr Kirk closes Chineham Park Primary next August.

The report points to falling standards at the school, saying it has failed three Ofsted inspections despite considerable support from Hampshire as the local education authority. It notes that this support was double that usually given to schools judged to be “inadequate” by Ofsted.

The officers state there are just 86 pupils at the school, even though it has capacity for 180. They also note that five out of six pupils in the catchment area go elsewhere, making the school unviable.

The report says the latest Ofsted monitoring inspection in December states the school has made inadequate progress overall against areas identified for improvement.

Over 10 years, Chineham Park Primary has shown a pattern of improvements with local authority support, but the report notes that it has slumped again when that support was reduced.

The officers forecast that there will be 560 surplus places at schools within a one-mile radius by September 2010 and state that the quality of education in 10 alternative schools is better than at Chineham Park.

If Cllr Kirk agrees with the officers’ recommendations but there are objections to his decision, the matter will go before the county council’s Cabinet in March for a final decision – but a stay of execution will be highly unlikely once Cllr Kirk has delivered his verdict.

it is a sad day about the school 40 years of history and many children that came away from that school and went on to greater things in life now. the thing is as they close the school so they cut the throat of popley poets, the poets have nothing to live for on it now as it has all been taken away they i belive over the last fifteen years set out to destroy a onco close community spirit that others could and would never have, we will see even more kids wondering the streets for the want of a place to go we will see kids leave schoo with very little hope in life and we can thank H.C.C FOR THEIR HELP IN DOING THIS, THE ONLY THING WE WILL ENJOY IS WHEN THE "WORM TURNS".

Perhaps you should tell your mate McCormick what a sad day it is George? He's sat on his hands in his mostly ceremonial governors role at that school for how many years? What about your other ward Councillor Frankum? Is she not sat on the HCC Hampshire and Isle of Wight Educational Trust? Still, I guess they will *still* get your vote next year ;-). Give Spider a nudge will you, I need to hear how it was all Thatcher Thatcher the milk snatchers fault...... The worm will only turn in Popley for the better when you boot out all them there bango playin cousin's, bruvers n' sisters from the local cash generating politics machine.
{post expected to last less than half an hour on the site - but facts remain the same}

Now I'm off the IEB I can comment more freely on these matters.

George Potten, your points are noted.

Tintinout, you clearly know little or nothing about the school and therefore anything you post is of little or no value.

All the hours and days spent visiting the school, in classes, assemblies and meetings over nearly 8 years means being a Governor and then an IEB member is far from a "ceremonial role". Hampshire is always on the look-out for Governors so perhaps you might like to volunteer and see for yourself the work that goes in, and in the process make a useful contribution.

And as for "bango playing cousin's, bruvers n' sisters from the local cash generating politics machine": Borough councillors earn just 6k a year and their county equivalents double that. Again, you could find out yourself by standing for election, although you'd have to declare your real name and address on a ballot paper first as the public don't like deceitful types who hide behind pseudonyms and putting "Tintinout, Bramley" on your nomination form will mean it will be rejected.

vert sad person but again it is not about us it is the kids, i have seen some great kids at the school now with their own families and some are pillers of our community, i do not want to even worry my self about a tin can as in the end they just ruust away. Andrew has done a great job in his time in popley east be him labour lib or TORY so that is nothing to do with it. it is the amount of nights he has come home from working in london then out the door to the council or the school you can often see him walking the estates talking to the residents about things that are needed in the community, i have never seen a blue do that and you never will untill election time. Yes i would vote for him any time because it was part of my heritage, as my great grandfather was a founder of the labour movment and i am proud of his achivments in the end of the 1800s i hope tin man you could come half way to being as great as he was.

I echo that George, as for the (IEB) there were issues at the School that would challenge any ones conscience, other than those who were planted with their paymasters agenda.

So, thinning out all the Labour McCormick waffle - you spent 8 years being ineffective in your role? Resign = dishonour/admit failure. Probably in a sinister attempt to save face, but grab a Labour flannel old chap, you've ended up with egg all over your face.

The public could view this as another Labour triumph for Popley - this one with a *direct* councillor hand firmly on the tiller!

Geroge; As for the kids being the losers, that is *not* true. They *have* been the losers at the hands of an appalling, failing school where your old mate has sat on the board. They can only be winners with *better* education unless any parent would like to openly say they are happy to have their kids put at a disadvantage?

With regards to our 'honest' local councillors. If they are *not* ashamed of the pennies they take for bus fares and car trips, why is it that mentioning the factual amounts here results in Jane Frankum running to the Gazette requesting their removal?

Still, the election is coming, the facts are there and the local webistes are ready to go go go with it all Andy..... Got any plans for your spare time when you are kicked out on your arse, Luser?

Wow 6k a year for doing nothing except putting the people of basingstoke through misery with ineffectual work. designing car parks that people get fined for parking in cos you painted the bays too small. WHOSE POCKET DOES THAT MONEY GO INTO!. Spending money arseing up the road system at brighton hill and anywhere else where it becomes difficult to get a car around and yet leaving the broken glass and graffiti and drug needles on show around the town. You guys are proud to serve.

Tintinout proves my point about what he posts is of little value. Lest anyone forget I'm also on the board of Governors for Marnel Junior school which is doing extremely well. The difference between the two schools is mainly one of critical mass and stability of staffing structure. Not that any facts like these will get in the way of the likes of Tintinout calling for me to resign. I stand firm by all I have done in Popley, most of the people who live in Popley do so too.

I do think that it is a bit rich to condemn the Labour councillors when they have fought valiantly to keep the school open. Has our MP Maria Miller (a shadow minister - with a schools remit) bothered to even comment on this school closure?
The answer is a resounding NO.

PopleyRebel says...

In her column she was complaining about the amount of time MPs off over Christmas, therefore, having time on her hands there’s not excuse for to stay on the fence, furthermore, as her Tory Council have publicly announced their decision that was made many months ago I think she owes us an explanation as to her silence.

She has a responsible job in the shadow Cabinet; however, staying in the shadows in her own constituency is not that of Honourable Member of Westminster.

It’s a stitch up and we need an inquiry.

The problem is your so busy trying to look at getting one over on everyone else that you don't actually see whats infront of you. My opinion of poiticians gets less everytime I read yours or any others post on a website. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Is it not true to say that Tintinout is a well known tory blogger - so in that case this is politicised. If you want to debate then things can and often do become hostile. No one wants to be seen to be wrong.
I have personally seen the hard work and dedication of the Popley Labour councillors and they fought like trojans to keep this school open.
The truth is, we have an MP who parades herself off as a member of the shadow cabinet but she did not have a single word to say about this. That does deserve condemnation.

No one can be more critical of our MP then me (Popleyrebel) She has neglected the School and therefore neglected Popley.
She is towing the party line by retreating to sitting on the fence, and that can never be right for the Shadow Spokesperson for Schools, furthermore, had this been a Labour Council she (Maria Miller) and her Co partners the Shadow Cabinet would have raised the issue in the House of Commons.

How can any MP become a spectator when a School in their constituency is closed?
It beggars belief,

11:08am Mon 21 Dec 09

George,
Regarding our MP, I would love to share your optimism sadly however; I believe she nailed her closures to mast long before any decision was made to close the School. Furthermore, the closure of any School would involve the local MP therefore; Maria Miller is either, staying quiet and hoping it blows over, or she to embarrassed to make a public statement., either way, it a dereliction of her duty.

MPs can object to the proposed closure of a School in their constituency, as been the case on many occasions, however, Maria Miller MP has chosen Party Politics by supporting HCC who’s education policy is in tatters as there are more schools in the Basingstoke area on the verge of Special Measures.

What does concern me is fact that Maria Miller hasn’t been pressured to making a statement, we the public are invited to comment on the issue however, Maria Miller has enjoyed a total blackout by the press and media.

We need an inquiry

basingstoketown says...
1:16pm Mon 21 Dec 09

Maria Miller should resign - she does not represent her whole constituency and that is the basis of being an MP.

I totally agree, what also concerns me is the future of the staff at the School, how can they trust HCC on future appointments as they can’t be trusted and therefore, many if not all would be sidelined in disgrace; we all know they have worked hard and their dedication to the School deserve a positive outcome.
Furthermore, there are staff at the School who (as I understand it) are not happy with the negative publicity towards their contribution in trying to save the School.

The staff at the School tried their very best, some might say, having one hand tied behind your back makes it harder; however, having both hands tied behind your back makes it impossible.
“Mission impossible” springs to mind.

As with George I would love to share your optimism, however, people have short memories, furthermore, Maria Miller has the added protection of the press blackout therefore, it’s the minority and not the majority that are aware of her silence.
The sooner this paper drops their policy of interviewing Maria Miller by invitation only the sooner people will get the full story.

So come on Gazette start knocking on her door and get some answers.

It is our job to keep reminding people and exposing Maria Miller and the Tories. I for one will never give up and there is more to the spin and deceit than people actually know. They accused Labour after taking power of unremitting spin - HYPOCRITES. They are the masters of do as I say and not as I DO!!!
Maria Miller and the Tories are only geared to helping the wealthy and their cronies - this school proves it. If there are any more 'failing' schools in inner Basingstoke they had better watch out.
