PLANS are afoot to ban heavy goods vehicles from a north Hampshire village.

Councillor Cathy Osselton, Basingstoke and Deane Borough councillor for the Kingsclere ward, has set in motion a campaign to prevent heavy good vehicles (HGVs) above a certain weight from passing through the village.

Speaking at Monday’s Kingsclere Parish Council meeting, Cllr Osselton, who is also a parish councillor, said: “There are lots of what I call juggernauts coming off Newbury Road into the village and along Swan Street on a rat run, in my opinion, to the A34.

“They are shaking the houses, I have stood and watched them and it’s getting dangerous.

“There aren’t foundations there and we are going to have problems in years to come if we don’t do something now.”

She said representatives from Hampshire County Council’s highways department are coming to look at the problem on November 4.

She said: “I think we need a weight restriction in Kingsclere, and there are a number of people in the village who are willing to help get a petition going that we will take to the borough.”

After the meeting Cllr Osselton added that HGVs have been a problem in Kingsclere for a number of years.

She said: “It seems to have got worse this year.

“If Hampshire County Council are willing to go forward with a weight restriction there’s a long process.

“And this is a farming village, so it would have to be a weight restriction ‘except for access’ for our farmers and shopkeepers.”
