A THIEF snatched a purse from a pensioner as she walked down a Basingstoke street.

The theft took place at around 12.20pm on Tuesday, October 6, as the 77-year-old woman walked along Pershore Road, Popley.

A man, who wore a caramel-coloured hooded top, approached her from behind, snatched her purse and ran away. The purse contained a betting slip, keys, store cards, photographs and a small amount of cash.

The man is described as of mixed race, 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build and with a dark, thin moustache.

Police officers are now appealing for witnesses.

PC Daniel Carter, of the Basingstoke Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: “This was a cowardly crime against a vulnerable member of the public.

“We are keen to hear from any witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time and saw a man matching the description.”

Anyone with information can contact PC Carter at Basingstoke police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers in 0800 555 111.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and bailed in connection with this incident.
