PLANS to open a museum in Overton look set to be rescued.

A museum showcasing the history of the village was to be unveiled in the High Street, but the plans hit a stumbling block earlier this month when the Overton Museum Committee was told a tenant was close to renting the museum’s proposed location.

Now, discussions have been held between the committee and Overton Community Association about housing the museum at the disused toilet block at Overton Community Centre, in the High Street.

Museum committee member, Peter Baker, said: “The new location we hope to use is smaller than what we had in mind but what we will do is have rolling exhibitions so that the material is fresh.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for the villagers to contribute their artefacts. We’ve already had a lot of donations, one item, an exercise book from a local man who was in the RAF, is particularly interesting.

“We’re very hopeful it will go ahead.”

The museum was to be in the disused One Stop Shop convenience store, in the High Street, until the committee were told a tenant had been found.

The museum group had an agreement they could use the former shop while it was not occupied.

Paula Baker, (no relation), chairman of trustees for Overton Community Association, said: “All things being well, we will be able to host the museum.

“There’s a big appetite for people to discover about the history of the village and this will be a great way for them to do it.

She said further discussions were required, but added: “We are happy to help.”
