Music on the green

AS HUNDREDS of thousands of people descended on Glastonbury, revellers enjoyed a slightly more scaled-down music festival in Silchester.

The Silchester Music Festival on Silchester Green celebrated turning five-years-old last Satur-day.

The festival aims to promote young talent in Silchester and the surrounding area.

Organiser Sonia Grout said: “This is one of the only music festivals aimed purely at showcasing live music by young artists – we’ve even got band with members as young as 12-years-old.

“It’s been a wonderful fifth birthday. The festival has continued to grow and grow and it’s fantastic to see so many people here.”

Music fans enjoyed a licensed bar and barbecue, and a change in the afternoon schedule from previous years.

Nadeen White, singer for THAT Nadeen White Experience, said: “This is the first time we’ve played here and we’ve loved every minute – it’s a great festival.

“We’re a band inspired by pirates and the crowd seemed to like our swashbuckling sound. We look forward to next year.”

Profits from the festival will be donated to Naomi House, St. Michael’s Hospice, Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance and Silchester Village Hall Refurbishment Fund.

Rachael Dolan, aged 20, of Pamber Heath enjoyed the music while sitting on the grass.

Miss Dolan said: “It’s nice to have something like this locally, where you can come along, sit on the green and just enjoy the music.”
