Mums get chance to swap ironing board for iron will

AN IRON mum event featuring “Buns of Steel” is being organised for busy mothers.

The inaugural Bramley Iron Mum event – involving running, cycling and a sprint – is the brainchild of three Bramley mums, Alison Jones, Rachel Young and Caroline Sherlock, who have six children between them.

Ms Jones, of Bramley Lane, explained: “Rachel came up with the idea from a conversation about the fact that working mums don’t get time to exercise and that what we really need is a goal.

“We know exercise will make us feel good but it’s so difficult to find the time, so we wanted to organise something that would motivate people and we want them to feel that they’ve achieved something at the end of it.”

The event will take place at 10am, on September 5 at Clift Pavilion, The Street, in Bramley.

Weekly training sessions with an instructor are being held on Wednesday evenings at Clift Meadow with a warm-up, a walk or run depending on fitness levels, and a stretch.

Ms Jones, 39, said: “We want to start up circuit classes, bike rides and get people to come and talk to us about bike maintenance and tips on running, so we are making it more than just a one-off event – it’s a lifestyle change.”

There is a £5 registration fee for the event, but the fitness sessions are free, although a small fee may be necessary for circuit classes.

There will be two events on the day: “Buns of Steel” – involving a three-kilometre run, six-kilometre cycle and a strength sprint – and “Abs of Iron” – consisting of a six-kilometre run, 12km cycle and a strength sprint.

For the sprint, women will have to carry something heavy – yet to be decided – as they sprint over a short distance.

The event is also raising money for the Basingstoke National Childbirth Trust (NCT) branch and Bramley WI Lite.

Anyone who wants to know more, or any local business that would like to sponsor the event, can visit ironmum.co.uk, or email bramleyironmum@googlemail.com.

The organisers have also created a Facebook group – Bramley Iron Mum – and are posting updates on Twitter as Iron_Mum.
