YET more motoring misery is on the cards for drivers with the next stage of the major improvement works to a busy Basingstoke roundabout due to start today.
The road under the eastern bridge at the Aldermaston Road Roundabout has been closed for two weeks for repairs to the carriageway, forcing drivers to follow lengthy diversions.
And today, the road under the western bridge will be closed to allow the second, three-week phase of repair work to be carried out.
The road under the eastern bridge will, however, reopen today.
Motorists will be diverted from the roundabout on to the A339 westbound, to the Newbury Road Junction roundabout at the junction of Ringways north and west, and then back along the A339 eastbound to the Aldermaston Road Roundabout.
Bus services will also be affected, with changes to the routes covering Popley, Oakridge, Chineham, Sherborne St John and Bramley.
The A340 will also be widened from the roundabout to Priestley Road and the Merton Rise development will be served by new access roads.
The project also includes footpaths being added in parts of Popley Way, Oakridge Road and Aldermaston Road South to Hubbard Road.
Hampshire County Council has reassured drivers that all diversions will be signposted.

No it's done when the road is at it's busiest and likely to upset as many travellers as possible.
Also, as this roundabout has reached it's maximum flow-rate wouldn't it have been sensible to install traffic lights now, rather than in a years time causing even more congestion?
I dunno, these things are so 'reasonable and obvious' to motorists who use these roads that it makes you wonder if the people who give the go-ahead for these 'improvements' ever get to see the roads apart from on a large sheet of paper?
