Help youngsters leave a life of crime

11:54am Friday 21st September 2001

VOLUNTEERS are wanted to help young people involved in crime get their lives back on track.

Kent Youth Offending Team (Kent YOT) works with youngsters aged 10 to 17 who have been involved in crime and needs around 100 volunteers.

They will act as panel members under the Government's new scheme to replace fines and conditional charges with Referral Orders for some young people who appear in court for the first time and plead guilty.

Young offenders will meet with a YOT officer and two volunteers to discuss their crime and decide the appropriate punishment. They may also meet their victims.

The scheme starts next April. For more information, call 01622 772183.
