DETAILS of Basingstoke's biggest charity bike ride of 2008 have been announced - and organisers are hoping that this year's event will be better than ever.

Big Wheel 14, in aid of St Michael's Hospice, is set to take place on Sunday, July 20.

Last year, more than 1,100 riders took part, raising £30,000 for the Basingstoke hospice. This year, organisers are hoping that 1,500 people will sign up to take part.

The Big Wheel offers participants a choice of three routes of varying lengths, all of which take cyclists through some of the most beautiful countryside in north Hampshire.

Pat Darty, events co-ordinator for the hospice, said: "Cycling is the perfect way to a fit and healthy lifestyle, with the added opportunity to take in the scenery around Basingstoke.

"The Big Wheel 14 offers three beautiful routes - all with refreshment stops - and is an excellent day out for all the family.

"What better way to spend a glorious summer's day than by cycling one of the three cycle routes - seven, 24 or 45 miles - starting and finishing at Down Grange Sports Complex, Basingstoke?"

As well as the bike rides, there will be plenty of fun entertainment at Down Grange for those not cycling on the day.

Kestrel FM will be providing the music, and children's entertainers Circus Works will be there along with face-painting, a bouncy castle and plenty of food and drink.

Entry to Big Wheel 14 costs £12 per adult, £6 per child (aged 16 or under and accompanied by an adult), £30 for two adults and two children and £20 for a tandem. Participants are also encouraged to collect as much sponsorship as possible.

You can register and pay online by visiting www.stmichaelshospice. org/events or call 01256 848848 for a registration form.

To help riders prepare for the event, the North Hampshire Road Club will be running free training rides each Monday until the day of the Big Wheel.

The group meets at Monk Sherbourne Village Hall at 6.45pm, and participants in the charity event are welcome to just turn up.
