Tax u-turn will increase debt

11:29am Wednesday 4th June 2008

MONDAY of this week was "Tax Freedom Day".

Most of us pay a bit of our tax bill every month through PAYE, but if we didn't, then this is the day when most people have earned what is needed to cover their tax bill from the Government and start to earn money that they can spend for themselves.

What is even more shocking is that Tax Freedom Day would be "celebrated" on June 14, some two weeks later, if the Government came clean on the level of national debt.

As recently as a fortnight ago, the Government announced a u-turn regarding the axing of the 10p tax rate.

What it talked less about was that this was to be paid for by adding another £2.7billion to the debt of this country and that now its credit has run out.

Little wonder that the Government is silent on the unsustainable levels of personal debt in this country - its own finances do not stand close scrutiny.

The debate around cannabis has been confusing for parents and children alike. But there really should be no confusion at all.

The harm that cannabis can cause, particularly to the mental health of those who use it, is well documented. Cannabis has never been safe - and we have to ensure our children know that this is the case.

Pre-school is a vital part of our children's early years and sets the foundations for their future - they deserve our support and congratulations on the excellent work that they do.
