Weather plays a part for bowlers

Andover Bowls Club have had a mixed start to the season with the weather.
The open day was wet so members were unable to get on the green but later in the week several hardy souls were seen practising ready for the start of the league games. Bob Wood's Salisbury and District Men's League team went to Salisbury Victoria and came away with a good 12-2 win which reversed the result of last year.
Tom Hazard, back after a year away from the green, won handsomely aided by Jim Horne and Alan Bevan. The following Wednesday was a washout for three of the Whitchurch League teams but the B team won 5-0 away at Thornycroft for a good start season.
The club hosted the high profile representative match between the Salisbury and District and Basingstoke Leagues on Sunday. Although the weather forecast was awful the match was played in fairly good conditions with only a few spots of rain. Despite it being so early in the season the standard of play was high and enjoyed by a big attendance.
It was tight and hard fought with the Basingstoke League emerging as winners. The Andover players certainly did not disgrace themselves with the rink of Roy Turner, Den Brown, Jim Catchpole and Ken Eaton picking up the spoils for highest winning Salisbury rink.
After a welcome hot meal the players were entertained by some witty and amusing speeches by the league presidents.
