THE forming of a newly named constituency is one of the major Hampshire changes as part of parliamentary boundary change proposals.

Still to be confirmed, MPs will vote on the proposals next month.

They include the forming of a new Test Valley constituency which will replace the current Romsey and Southampton North area.

Other changes around the county include the forming of Awbridge, Mottisfont, Kimbridge and West and East Tytherley into the New Forest East constituency.

The changes come after the government promised the consultations as part of its election manifesto.

MP Caroline Nokes said: “I will, of course, vote in favour of these changes when I have the opportunity to do so – just as I did previously when the Romsey and Southampton North constituency was to be abolished altogether. That said, I will be disappointed to see Bassett and Swaythling move to another constituency along with my own home ward of Blackwater.”

Other major changes include MP George Hollingbery’s Meon Valley constituency vanish, dissolved into the areas around it.

Secretary to the commission, Sam Hartley, said: “The recommendations we have published mark the end of a thorough and consultative process to build the new map of constituencies.

“We’ve travelled the country, taken account of over 35,000 public comments, and heard many impassioned views about how best to reflect local communities in our recommendations, while ensuring that constituencies are all much more equally represented.

“We’re confident that the map we propose is the best match of the legal rules Parliament have set us.

“It’s now up to Parliament to decide whether these boundaries will be used at the next general election.”

Overall, the final recommendations could see the number of MPs cut from 650 to 600.

It will see England with 501 seats for the next election, which is down by 32.
