Speculative plans to redevelop a brownfield site are expected to be formally submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

McCarthy and Stone, who specialise in retirement living, are set to present a proposal for the Reading Warehouses building and New Road site in Tadley.

It is expected that the retirement living firm are set to seek planning permission to deliver a new retirement living complex with a new convenience store alongside it.

A statement on McCarthy and Stone’s website said: “McCarthy and Stone’s initial plans propose to redevelop the site with a new convenience store alongside approximately 37 specialist retirement living apartments for private sale, together with landscaped gardens and on-site car parking spaces.”

If a plan is put before the borough council and is granted, the current Reading Warehouse site would be demolished to make way for the new complex and develop tailored communal facilities, including a residents’ lounge and a guest suite.

However, before a formal planning application has been submitted, Tadley residents have taken to social media to air their concerns with the proposed development.

Avril Woodford posted on Facebook: “I was utterly disgusted to see the proposal of a convenience store in the documents. There is already a convenience store less than 100 metres from this site.

“This would surely end a family run business that has been run by a local family for many years. Why don’t you look at the current needs of such a vast town and perhaps look at increasing the parking at the local GP practice next door that your residents would benefit from using or better yet find something we don’t have, such as a local bakery.”

Alison Noad added: “Before we build more houses surely the infrastructure needs to be sorted for the residents of Tadley rather than adding more problems to the overstretched area.”
