A GOLFING fundraising day has been organised to help a school for disabled children.

Keen golfer and father Ed Kemp has put together a day-long golf tournament to raise money for Saxon Wood School, in Barron Place, where his son Matthew attends.

The event will be taking place at Weybrook Park Golf Club, where Ed is a member, as the seniors branch of the club has chosen to support Saxon Wood School as this year’s charity.

Matthew, six, is a pupil at the school as he has a life-limiting muscle condition called Myotubular Myopathy, which causes profound muscle weakness, as well as dangerously affecting the muscles which control breathing and swallowing.

Ed said: “The school is amazing, and he loves going. He has developed so much in his time there, including with his speech and his independence.

“I want to help the school and Matthew out, and I thought I’d do it the best way I know how, with golf.”

The 18-hole competition has gained an unexpected amount of traction online, where it has taken on a life of its own.

After asking companies and tournament organisers for help, there have been around 70 prizes donated so far, worth more than £4,000 in total, available to win on the day.

After a surprise push from prominent golfing Youtuber Mark Crossfield, £2,000 was donated to the JustGiving page, with donations coming from all over the world.

Ed added: “It’s surprisingly amazing that people from all over the world want to get involved, given that we are trying to raise money for a local Hampshire school.

“Everyone is welcome on the day, including non-members. We can always use more players, prizes, volunteers or sponsors.”

The Matthew Kemp Charity Open Day will be teeing off at 9am on Saturday, 13 October.
