AN ‘UNIQUE’ project to physically and metaphorically link what were two schools has been completed.

After months of building, a new state-of-the-art extension was officially opened at the one-time Oakridge Infant and Junior School sites by special guests and the Oakridge Schools Federation’s School Council on Wednesday last week.

The new extension will allow the Oakridge Schools Federation to increase its capacity but also adds a physical connection between what was the two schools.

Speaking at the event, Iain Cameron, chair of governors at the Oakridge Federation, said: “This project is unique because the vision of the executive headteacher; Diane [Charman] created the idea of a building which connects the two schools, aiding pupil transition from infants to junior school supporting a much more secure educational journey from age four to 11.

“The new layout enables the school to site its year groups into sets of three classes which enhances the delivery of the curriculum and builds a more enriched learning environment.

“To have a school offering such high standards of teaching and learning is of such significance to the community in this part of Basingstoke, and from September, more families than ever before will have access to this outstanding facility.”

Guests at the event included representatives from Hampshire County Council’s children’s services department and the police and crime commissioner who joined together with representatives from the school council to officially unveil the new building built by Raymond Brown.

Mr Cameron finished his speech by thanking those involved. He said: "I would like to thank all the staff here, our wonderful children and the parents and families that make this school community great. Without the support of so many in the community we would not be able to be standing here today recognising something that is quite truly brilliant.”

Diane Charman, executive head teacher of the Oakridge Federation, said: “Thank you to all our parents and the community for supporting the school while the building work has been going on.

“We now have a fabulous extension to our school designed by Ciaran Sidwell from Hampshire County Council and built by Raymond Brown.

“The Hampshire team, Raymond Brown and the school developed a good working relationship from the start which enabled everyone involved to work to a high standard and allow the school to be a school at the same time.

“The children can’t wait to move in. They love it.’
