SEWING on badges, selling refreshments and running “sausage sizzles” have all been part of a teenager’s bid to raise funds to get to an international event.

Kitty Caborn is the first scout representing Baughurst to be selected to go to the World Scout Jamboree in the USA next year.

Now, the 13-year-old is stepping up her fundraising to cover her costs as well as contributing to help another scout from a developing country travel to the jamboree.

In a bid to raise £3,750, Kitty is taking part in a 78-mile trek along The Brenda Parker Way.

The route starts off in Aldershot passing through Baughurst, Kingsclere, Burghclere, Highclere and finishes in Andover.

In total Kitty is looking to compete the challenge in six stages over the next few weeks.

Stuart Caborn, Kitty’s father and assistant scout leader for Baughurst Scouts, said she has undertaken the task completely off her own back.

He said: “After she got selected for the jamboree she set about raising funds.

“Even though she is doing the majority of the walk on her own, she wanted to integrate other scouts and set an example to some of the younger scouts.

“The other bits like sewing the badges etc is giving a benefit but the trek is totally her idea.”

Kitty has been selected as one of the Hampshire representatives for the jamboree, which will be held in West Virginia.

The event is an opportunity for cultural exchange for Scouts from across the globe to promote peace, mutual understanding and respect over a three-week-long visit.

As the first representative from Baughurst, Kitty is set to fly the flag for the area.

Stuart added: “I am delighted for her and she is really excited to go out there.

“I applied to go as a scout leader, but I didn’t get selected, so it just shows how much she wanted this opportunity.

“It has been amazing watching her grow into the confident 13-year-old she is today and a massive part of that is from being a Beaver and then joining the Scouts.”
