ESCAPING an alien-infested Basingstoke is the objective of a new game that features the town as a setting.

Basingstoke is a newly-released videogame from Somerset-based game developer, Puppygames.

The premise of the game is that players find themselves in the town after it has been invaded by aliens from the evil moon Titan and must escape.

This, according to the developer, involves stealth, distraction, ‘running away’ and, as a last resort, ‘extreme violence’. This involves players creating improvised weapons to help them in their task of escaping.

The idea came to one of the creators after having worked in Basingstoke. The team are a group of four enthusiasts who are not necessarily full-time game developers.

Puppygames director, Caspian Prince, said: “About 10 years ago I found myself working in Basingstoke.

“Back then we made a computer game called Revenge of the Titans, which sees the Earth being attacked by evil monsters from Titan etc.

“I thought it was amusing at the time that the first place they attacked on the world was Basingstoke.”

Basingstoke the game will feature sights based on Basingstoke landmarks such as the Red Lion, the police station, Willis Museum, railway station and even the ‘Wote Street Willy’ is said to make an appearance.

However, the broad map that players will be going through will be randomly generated each time for more replayability, with the map not being strictly true to the town.

The game was designed with the intention of being a distinctly English-themed apocalyptic scenario, featuring numerous references about going to the pub, and making use of leftover kebabs.

Caspian added: “We’ve made possibly the most hyper-realistic simulation of small-town England after dark.

“After a few hours’ play you should be an expert in survival after pub closing time.”

Basingstoke was released on April 27 and is available now on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

The game may also move onto consoles such as Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One in the coming year.
