NOMINATIONS are flooding in for an new awards scheme set up to celebrate education in the Basingstoke and Deane area.

Last week, the Basingstoke Gazette Education Awards was officially launched, to celebrate and recognise those who play a part in learning across the area.

So far, nominations for awards have come in relating to an array of schools including St John’s Church of England, Brighton Hill Community School, The Costello, Parkview Primary and Coppice Spring.

This week, a leading surgeon has signed up to be the guest speaker at the event.

Merv Rees, a full-time consultant surgeon and medical director clinical development at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will fulfil the role at the event which takes place at The Apollo Hotel on July 13.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Ad Hominem, for more than 30 years, Merv has been a full-time practising surgeon involved in both acute and elective general surgery.

He established a liver surgery unit at Basingstoke hospital, which is recognised worldwide for its expertise.

Mr Rees is also one of four trustees of Ark Cancer Centre Charity which has also been chosen as the charity for the Basingstoke Gazette Education Awards.

The charity is raising £5million towards a cancer treatment centre that will serve the population in the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust area, likely to be based at the current Basingstoke hospital site.

Nominations for the awards can be made up until June 1.
