THE selfless and caring act of a young girl from Brighton Hill managed to raise nearly £2,000 for charity.

Not only did nine-year-old Abigail Reid raise money for charity, but by getting her luscious locks cut off she has supported a child who has lost their own hair.

It was Abigail’s inquisitive nature which led to her wanting to do something for the Little Princess Trust when she correctly guessed the number of sweets in a jar.

Abigail’s mum Katie Gee told the Gazette: “She asked the lady in Shear Beauty why she had just paid a pound to win the sweets and she explained they were raising money for the Little Princess Trust.

“When Abigail heard what they did she flicked her hair with sass saying ‘I have lovely long hair’ and the woman said it was and it would make a lovely wig for a child, to which Abigail replied ‘you can have it’ and the woman was in complete shock.”

After the Chalk Ridge Primary School student had set her mind to getting her hair cut off she, along with her mum, set about organising a fundraiser for Abigail to have her hair cut.

The scene was set on Friday, 9 March at the Soldiers Return pub, in Upper Sherborne Road, when the nine-year-old had nine inches of her long hair cut off.

Miss Gee added: “I kept saying to her are you sure you want to do it and she would just say to me 'it’s only hair mummy it will grow back'.

“In that moment my heart just wanted to explode with pride. She is just such a caring person and even though I have encouraged her this whole thing was her idea and she wanted to do everything she could.”

Along with the nine inches of hair donated which will go towards creating a real hair wigs for children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses, Abigail also managed to raise £1,780 for the charity.
