THE design of more than 50 new homes in Overton has been laid out to planning chiefs.

Bargate Homes has already had approval from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in principle to develop a piece of land to the west of Sapley Playing Fields, in Sapley Lane, with a proposal for 55 new homes.

However, a follow-up planning application submitted outlines the design, landscaping and layout of the new homes proposed for the site which will include one, two, three and four bed houses and flats.

In the application, the company sought to make clear they are looking to keep the new buildings in line with properties already in Overton.

Detailing the design the application reads: “What is clear from visiting the area is that there is a rich cultural and architectural legacy to draw inspiration from.

“The historic village does contain many fine buildings and a rich tapestry of materials, architectural format and detail that can all be used as design inspiration to motivate a contextually-driven response here and a place creation that has reference to local identity whilst sustaining its own sense of arrival and place.”

In accordance with the outline of the plan, 33 of the proposed homes will be available on the open market for purchase, whereas the remainder of 22 properties will be affordable homes.

The application details a few more of the features. It read: “Public open space meanders along the site boundaries will reinforce the public realm element with strategically located structural trees and a seasonal display of bulbs.

“The informal play areas and public open space, and particularly to [the] north east, will be planted with varied grassland and planting, to create an interesting play environment that is in keeping with the nature of the site.”

The borough council formally approved the principle development of the site in October last year, granting the permission subject to planning conditions.

The deadline for making any comments about the planning conditions is March 14.
