THE volunteer clock-winder of the Whitchurch Silk Mill’s antique timepiece has been thanked as the clock keeps ticking during the venue’s renovation.

David Poole, pictured, a Whitchurch resident, has been keeping the centuries-old clock wound since 2012 -he has to make sure that the timepiece is wound every week so that it does not lose the time.

Mill director Sue Tapliss said: “It takes a lot of strength to make sure that the clock is fully wound, and David does a great job.”

The clock, built in 1816, is known locally as the Waterloo Clock after the story that it was constructed to celebrate the victory of the Battle of Waterloo.

The Silk Mill will re-open later this year after its extensive renovation.
