THREE pensioners have died following a two-car crash on Saturday afternoon near Lasham, on a stretch of road notorious for accidents.

A Honda being driven by an 87-year-old woman from Alton vehicle collided with a Hyundai on the A339 at its junction with Station Road at 1.40pm.

Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that a 77-year-old woman from London, who was in the rear seat of the Honda, died at the scene.

An 80-year-old man, also from London, who was also a rear seat passenger in the Honda died a short time later at Southampton General Hospital.

The front seat passenger - a 90-year-old man from Alton - was also taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died on Sunday morning.

The 87-year-old driver escaped with minor injuries.

Three men aged 17, 23 and 25, from Portsmouth, who were travelling in the Hyundai, also suffered minor injuries.

Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police closed the road following the accident and diversions were in place.

Sergeant Mark Furse, from Hampshire Constabulary, said: “This is a tragic incident where three people have lost their lives. The families of those involved are being supported by specially trained officers to help them at this extremely difficult time.

“We’re working to establish exactly what happened in the lead up to this incident and would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision and haven’t already made contact with us.”

Following the crash people took to social media to raise concerns about the junction and road.

Jackie Wilson posted: “Awful junction. Used to drive here daily and dreaded it. Thoughts with those affected.”

Chantal Vicario added: “Horrendous road, use it daily for commute to work on motorbike, very sad news.”

There have been a number of fatal crashes on the road over the years, which leads from Basingstoke to Alton, including one in May 2016 when a 27-year-old man lost his life and in July 2013 when a 25-year-old man died. In March 2012 a young couple from Portsmouth died when their motorbike went out of control.

When asked if the layout of the road could be looked at, Councillor Rob Humby, Executive Member for Environment and Transport at Hampshire County Council, said: “I was very sorry to hear about this accident and my thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved.

“This accident is now being investigated by the Police, and, it would not be appropriate to speculate about the causes. As with all such incidents, it will be the subject of an individual investigation by the Casualty Reduction Partnership (CRP) which consists of officers from Hampshire County Council, East Hampshire District Council and Hampshire Constabulary.  As part of this, the injury accident record will be carefully examined. Once completed, we will consider the outcome of the investigation and recommendations in the report.”
