THE two-day musical extravaganza Basingstoke Live is set to be rebooted as part of a new, ambitious vision.

For the first time in the festival’s 12-year history, there could be an entry fee in a bid to generate funds to bring bigger names to the showcase held at War Memorial Park.

As well has hosting more than 150 acts across the two days, Basingstoke Live in the past has offered a free day out for families, with a range of activities to do while in the arena, including a fun fair and creative zone.

However, under the proposed changes, day tickets for adults would cost £10 and weekend tickets cost £15.

This is part of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s 'Enriching Lives -art and culture at the heart of the community' project, which includes ensuring the two-day event is sustainable for the future.

Even though the main aim is to bring in bigger artists to Basingstoke, therefore potentially bringing more music lovers to the town, the borough council said the event will still be first and foremost as a platform for local acts and artists.

Arts and events manager at the borough council Ross Harvie said: “We have something very unique with Basingstoke Live and we have an opportunity to deliver something really exciting.

“We did see a drop in numbers last year, so by giving the event a bit of a refresh and give people attending a bit more value for money, then I can see people finding this an extremely exciting event.”

However, with the proposal to charge, the borough council said it needs to make sure it is gives visitors value for money.

Deputy leader of the borough council and portfolio holder for arts and heritage, Councillor Terri Reid said: “This is a commitment to Basingstoke Live and it is down to us to sell it that way.

“We have to show that there is lots for people to do on site.”

There will be a meeting surrounding the proposed changes help at the Civic Offices on Wednesday, 17 January.
